Brief

Brain Corp needed a Senior Autonomy Engineer to hit a critical product milestone. After six months of limited traction using generalist agencies, they asked us to identify a technically strong SLAM specialist with US work eligibility and willingness to relocate to San Diego.

Challenges

Despite being an established and well-funded business, backed by the SoftBank Vision Fund, Brain Corp faced a highly competitive West Coast talent market.

The role had been open for more than six months, with several agencies struggling to generate traction. The requirement for advanced expertise in SLAM and autonomy meant the viable candidate pool was small, and local competition from other robotics and AI companies was intense.

Finding someone with both the depth of technical skill and the ability to operate in a fast-paced, product-driven environment had proved particularly difficult.

Approach

  • We began by reviewing Brain Corp’s previous search activity, including how they’d hired, who they’d considered and what they’d learned from the process so far.
  • Conducted a detailed market map, revealing that most competitor companies had already been approached and the local talent pool was largely exhausted.
  • Expanded the search across the US and involved our UK and EU robotics teams to identify international engineers open to relocation.
  • We submitted six qualified candidates within five days of receiving the requisition, including the eventual hire from a leading UK robotics lab.
  • Following successful technical interviews and coding assessments, we supported negotiations to ensure a competitive offer with suitable relocation support.
  • During this process, we kept two additional shortlisted candidates engaged throughout interviews to maintain momentum and provide contingency in the event the candidate dropped out of process.
  • The offer was formally extended in just over 4 weeks from the search commencing, with the successful candidate starting with Brain Corp the following month.

Results and impact

  • Closed a six-month vacancy in under five weeks, resolving a critical skills gap in Brain Corp’s autonomy team.
  • Secured a senior robotics engineer from a leading UK lab, bringing deep SLAM expertise.
  • Managed a seamless international relocation, including visa support, family considerations and offer/bonus terms.
  • The candidate has made strong contributions to product development since joining, and remains a core member of the autonomy function.
